Girmay Haile is a prominent figure in Eritrean leadership and has played a leading role in the country’s development.
Mr. Girmay Haile has had 40 years of experience, including progressively senior leadership experience in national and international development, working in a career that started in grassroots community development in Eritrea, and as a veteran freedom fighter of the Eritrean liberation movement.
Beyond his home country, Girmay Haile has successfully managed strategic planning and policy advocacy in humanitarian, peace, and development programs in Africa, Eastern Europe, and Sothern America.
He led complex social policy and country response planning and managed country programs by providing high-quality political, policy, and technical support to countries and United Nations institutions. Sir Haile successfully mobilized financial resources for the various country programs and built the capacity of civil society organizations in the critical complementary role they play in development.

He has been an international civil servant for the last 21 years, serving the United Nations in senior leadership positions that have entailed coordinating the work of 11+ agencies of the United Nations system on HIV and AIDS and the multi-sectoral engagements that national HIV responses necessitated across government entities, civil society, and the private sector.
He has engaged in collaborative work at the highest levels of Government as well as ensured effective country support for multilateral initiatives at the regional and international levels.
Haile also played a critical role, as part of the UN Country Team, in the mediation for peace during the 2008 Post Election Violence in Kenya and the peaceful transition of power after the demise of President Bingu Wa Mutharika of Malawi in April 2012.
